A strong push is in progress to persuade the U.S. Postal Service to issue a commemorative, first-class stamp to honor the centennial of the Belle of Louisville in 2014.
Pursuit of the stamp is the first major thrust of the 24-member Belle of Louisville Centennial Committee, formed late last year to plan a series of activities to honor the 100th anniversary of the oldest authentic steamboat still plying America’s inland waterways.
The Belle was launched on Oct. 18, 1914, as the Idlewild and was later renamed the Avalon. When it was purchased by Jefferson County government in 1962 for $34,000, it was named the Belle of Louisville. The vessel now owned by metro government is a National Historic Landmark.
Beyond various officials sending their letters of support to the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee, there's apparently no word on what the Belle's fans can do to encourage the USPS to create the stamp. Perhaps an enterprising individual will create a Facebook page (at least).
Also, there's a Belle centennial committee planning various events leading up to the 100th anniversary. I'll be sure to post such events here at LouHI (unless any of you beat me to it).
