Jimmy Higdon, Republican, running in the special election for the 14th district state senate seat, is running the following two commercials that give the distinct impression that he's running for Congress. I have been watching politics all my life, and I have rarely seen anything as whacked as this.
I realize that politicians like to sometimes make fools out of voters by confusing issues, but isn't this level of confusion alien to our system? This isn't about supporting one candidate over the other — I'm just concerned that this is gross distortion and it needs to stop.
Dear District 14 voters, no matter who you elect, they will have zero influence on the federal health care reform legislation. And that's even if Congress goes with a state-level opt-out provision for the public option. It would take both the state house and senate to agree to opting out, and even Haydon's election to the seat won't return the senate to Democratic control.
Chill, folks, chill, and return to making this a state-level race, mm-k?

While the race really doesn't have much to do with Healthcare, using such a hot button issue and associating Haydon with a nut like Pelosi is an effective political shot. Maybe not very relevent but effective.

There's certainly a potential for effectiveness, but can they be effective if voters feel like their intelligence is being insulted? I guess we'll see on December 8.
Do you have a blog address? If so, I can put a link to it on my blog's sidebar.
Thank you kindly for the mention. This is actually a discussion board, but it's all right to list it in blog rolls. The main address is http://www.historyandissues.or...ouisville/ (please copy the link location rather than copying the chunked text here)
I'll add your blog to my state politics blog list. Cheers!

Maybe so. However, Haydon's vast fundraising advantage over Higdon will probably have more of an effect on Haydon winning the race than this issue. I believe I saw that Haydon is raising money about 2:1 over Higdon. That is hard to defeat.

Higdon was a guest today on the Brooks and Company political talk call in radio show on WBRT which I co-host with Jim Brooks (I'm the Democratic counterpoint to his Repub point). It is interesting to note that Higdon is being "snubbed" by the McConnellites as the big money is going to DC to fight health care, yet, as Steve points out, Higdon thinks he is running against Nancy P. Last night Rand Paul, Brett Guthrie and a Who's Who of state Repubs showed up here in B'town for a fundraiser for Jimmy, which was "packed." Can't believe it was as packed as Hawkes at Loretta with Govs Beshear, Jones, Carroll, Cong. Ben Chandler and even Mayor for life making the trip down there to rub shoulders with the hundreds of country folk of Marion County. There's money spent in this race, but the election will be won by who shows up on Dec. 8th with nothing else on the ballot in the middle of the Christmas season in a cold, rainy, snowy season....brrrr...chilling to think of...wish it were over already....

I would just like to point out that the second two campaign videos were not paid for by Jimmy's campaign, even Jodie's negative ad's have been paid for by someone other then his campaign. This will be the highest spending specail election in Kentucky History!!!

That's useful to know, but has Higdon asked those making commercials making it look like he's running for Congress to stop that? They're making him look like an idiot, honestly. He is probably personally much better than that.
